BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Ricky Taylor has set a track record for Daytona Prototypes in grabbing the pole for the Porsche 250, the third race of the Rolex Sports Car Series season.
Taylor drove his No. 10 SunTrust Ford Dallara to a fast lap of 103.988 mph on the 2.3-mile Barber Motorsports Park layout. The team is owned by his father, Wayne Taylor.
Taylor's younger brother Jordan nearly got the pole for the production-based GT class, which will race alongside the prototypes Saturday. Taylor's Mazda RX-8 ended up second-fastest behind the pole-sitting Mazda RX-8 of Jonathan Bomarito, which qualified at 95.378, a GT track record.
The current leaders of the Daytona Prototype standings, Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas, will start a BMW Riley third on Saturday.
