VALENCIA, Spain − Mercedes principal Ross Brawn is disappointed with his Formula One team's performance so far this season and admitted on Saturday that driver Michael Schumacher is "not where he wants to be.''
Schumacher and teammate Nico Rosberg missed the cut for the third round of European Grand Prix qualifying, meaning they were unable to compete for pole position. Schumacher qualified 15th and Rosberg 12th.
It was the worst qualifying session of the season for seven-time world champion Schumacher, who blamed braking and tire issues.
The German has faced increasing criticism of his driving in recent weeks and on Friday championship leader Lewis Hamilton said it was difficult for Schumacher ``to outdo the youngsters that have the hunger that he had when he started.''
In Valencia, Schumacher has hit back at his critics and Brawn defended his driver.
“We're seeing signs of progress in some races but not in others, but we've not had a great car this year, which has not helped (Schumacher),'' he said.
“We need to reflect, assess and see what our next steps should be,'' the Mercedes boss added. “We are pushing very hard to develop the car and sometimes in pushing so hard, you trip over.''
Schumacher acknowledged his frustration at the lack of progress at Mercedes, although he said the team will improve if given time.
“From my point of view, I have a three-year program,'' he said. ``Obviously we thought we would be closer, nearer and in a better situation this year, but that is not the case. So we have to understand and I have to work my way through as I did in the past and that is what we are here for.''
