SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (AP) Fernando Alonso says he is still a contender for Formula One's championship.
Alonso crashed out of the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday and his team also has an upcoming disciplinary hearing that could see the Italians docked points.
Alonso exited near the close of the race to drop 41 points behind winner and overall F1 leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
Alonso says the championship ``is still a possibility'' even if Ferrari risks a penalty over team orders resulting from a German GP 1-2 finish.
Felipe Massa appeared to let Alonso pass so he could take seven extra points, and governing body FIA could penalize Ferrari for the move on Sept. 8.
Team principal Stefano Domenicali says ``we're sure the World Council will understand our position on that.''
