SPARTA, Ky. – The canceled IZOD IndyCar Series test May 4 at Kentucky Speedway allowed Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti to return to his home near flood-ravaged Nashville, Tenn., and further assess property damage.
Over the weekend, flash flooding caused by more than 13 inches of rain killed at least 29 people in three states. The Cumberland River overflowed its banks, flooding much of the entertainment district of the Music City, including the Grand Ole Opry.
“Driving to the airport (early May 4) you could still see cars on the side of the road that had been caught up in obviously some sort of flash flood and then smashed against the barrier,” the two-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion said. “I looked down over the Opryland Hotel and the housing areas. Those people are still under feet of water. We lost some fencing, but we were very lucky.”
Flood waters began receding May 5.
