The 2010 season has been a roller coaster ride for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The rookie has led laps and has a top-10 finish but has also been caught up in several accidents.
Currently 31st in owner points, Stenhouse must qualify on time for Friday night’s Bubba Burger 250 at Richmond International Raceway. The young wheelman sat down to discuss the car he’s driving at RIR and how he’s getting through this trying time. Here’s what he had to say.
Q: You are taking a brand new car to Richmond, what are some of the advantages of taking a new car to the track?
A: It’s brand new and we want to keep it nice. It’s got all the latest stuff that Roush Fenway Racing and Ford has come up with for the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the guys are excited about it. It’s lighter than the older cars and I can’t wait to get into it this weekend. The guys on the No. 6 team build great cars and Mike (Kelley) has plenty of experience there, so I am pumped about being able to wheel a brand new piece. I know it will be fast.
Q: You have had two races with new crew chief Mike Kelley, can you talk about how it’s been working with him?
A: It’s been really good. I feel like we’re working well together. When we unload at the track, we’re fast right away and that’s what we need. The cars drive really well and that’s made it easier on me since I haven’t been to a lot of these tracks. Mike has been at Roush Fenway Racing for years and brings a ton of Nationwide experience. He’s been a huge help to not only me, but the entire CitiFinancial team. We have a great relationship and that will only help our performance each week.
Q: With eight races in the books in 2010, how would you evaluate your performance thus far?
A: I’m pretty hard on myself. I’d probably give myself a D. I’ve made some mistakes but the important thing is, I have learned from them. I don’t feel like I’ve been as consistent as I should, but the guys are behind me and that means a lot. We had a good run at Phoenix (top-10) so that helps, but we’ve got to keep digging and build on that positive experience. I just try keeping the tough times out of my mind and stay focused on the next race. I am looking forward to redeeming myself in Richmond Friday night.
