CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 1, 2010) – Roush Fenway Racing heads into this weekend’s Labor Day showdown at Atlanta Motor Speedway with three cars on the verge of locking up spots in this season’s Chase for the Sprint Cup.
The organization’s fleet is peaking at the right time, having seen its average finish drop to 11.75 in the past four races, compared to almost 17 in the previous four and 20th in the month of June.
However, Roush Fenway general manager Robbie Reiser is quick to point out that there are no magic bullets when it comes to the organization’s turn around and there are no guarantees.
“Everyone keeps saying what is the one thing?” said Reiser. “Well it’s not one thing. When you struggle as we have at times for the past year or so, we had to go back and look at everything.
“We had to look at everything from the teams to the cars, to what we do on a daily basis, to the processes that we use to build the cars,” added Reiser. “We had to go back and look at all of that.”
The re-examination appears to have paid off. After not placing a car inside the top five from mid- may to mid-July (a string of six races), Roush Fenway has placed a car inside the top five of the field in six of the last seven, including a win at Pocono in August.
“By looking at everything we’ve sort of been able to turn the corner and we’ve made it run a lot better,” added Reiser.
“We just got a little behind,” he went on to explain. “It’s not just in one issue, but in a lot of issues. We had to go back and look at it and try to get our combination put back together and it has just taken a little bit of time.
“That’s the nature of the business. You can be on top one week and behind the next. Things tend to go in those trends and you have work really hard to get to the top and stay there,” said Reiser, who helped Roush Fenway capture its first Sprint Cup Championship trophy as Matt Kenseth’s crew chief in 2003.
