BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) Ashley Force Hood is in position to earn her fourth No. 1 qualifying position of the season after the first day of the 29th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.
The other provisional No. 1 qualifiers on Friday were Brandon Bernstein in Top Fuel, Allen Johnson in Pro Stock and Andrew Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Two rain delays meant there was only one qualifying session Friday, but that was enough for Force Hood to earn the provisional pole in Funny Car with a pass of 4.102 seconds at 302.55 mph.
Bernstein paced the Top Fuel field with a 3.846-second pass at 309.27 mph for what would be only his first No. 1 of 2010. Johnson led Pro Stock with a 6.702 at 206.61 mph, while Hines claimed the provisional pole with 6.977 at 191.46 mph.
Qualifying concludes Saturday, when the field will be set for Sunday's final eliminations.
